The need for hairdressing gloves
National campaigns by the HSE in the UK have gone a long way to raising awareness within the profession to the risks that hairdressers face from dermatitis.
Headline grabbing statements about hairdressers being “17 times more likely than any other groups of workers to suffer from work related skin damage such as dermatitis and that 70% of hairdressers will suffer from work related skin damage at some point during their careers.” deliver the message with no uncertainty.
Leaving the dramatic headline aside, the message they are trying to get across is quite simple. Hairdressers are at greater risk of developing skin problems due the nature of their work and the chemicals that they use. However, by using suitable gloves and taking a little more care when it comes to washing and conditioning their hands, in many cases, these risks can be significantly reduced.
